Aurora, CO — 86-Year-Old Woman Killed in Crash on Havana St and 8th Ave
Written by Bradley Smith
Aurora, CO (May 4, 2025) – A woman has died from her injuries following a two-car crash that occurred in Aurora on Friday afternoon.
The fatal collision took place just after 12:00 p.m. on May 2 at the intersection of East 8th Avenue and Havana Street. According to the Aurora Police Department, the crash involved a Honda Accord and a Toyota Camry. Investigators believe the driver of the Honda was traveling westbound on 8th Avenue and attempted to turn onto Havana Street when they entered the path of oncoming traffic. The vehicle was then struck by a Toyota Camry.
Inside the Honda were two elderly Aurora residents—an 86-year-old man behind the wheel and his 86-year-old female passenger. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel for treatment. Tragically, the female passenger passed away shortly after arrival due to her injuries.
The driver of the Toyota Camry did not require hospitalization, and no other injuries have been reported at this time.
The Aurora Police Department’s traffic investigations unit has taken over the case and is actively working to determine what may have contributed to the collision. Officers are reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle data, and potential witness accounts to piece together a clearer picture of how the crash unfolded.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the woman who lost her life in this accident.
Car Accidents in Colorado
Car crashes in Colorado often involve dangerous left-hand turns or misjudged intersections, especially in urban areas. According to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation, intersection-related accidents account for a significant portion of the state’s serious crashes, particularly among older drivers. Age-related factors such as slower reaction time or limited visibility can contribute to these tragic outcomes.
To better understand the legal side of accidents like this one, it’s helpful to look at key factors involved in wrongful death claims:
- Wrongful Death Definition: These cases arise when someone dies due to another party’s negligent actions. In vehicle accidents, this could involve poor judgment behind the wheel, reckless maneuvers, or failure to yield. Surviving family members can pursue compensation for their loss.
- Who Can File: In Colorado, spouses, children, and sometimes parents of the deceased may file a wrongful death lawsuit. This right is time-sensitive, and waiting too long can affect the ability to recover damages.
- Damages Covered: These claims often include medical expenses, funeral costs, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship or income the deceased would have provided.
- Burden of Proof: The plaintiff must prove that the other party acted negligently and that this negligence directly caused the death. Accident reconstruction, witness accounts, and medical records all play a critical role in establishing fault.
- Settlements vs. Trials: Many wrongful death claims are settled outside of court. However, when a fair agreement cannot be reached, your attorney may advise taking the case to trial for full compensation.
