Aurora, CO - Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Coroner on E Colfax Ave

Aurora, CO (May 22, 2025) – A tragic incident unfolded late Wednesday night in northwest Aurora when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an Adams County coroner investigator, according to Aurora police.

The investigator was en route to a homicide scene around 10:52 p.m. when the collision occurred near East Colfax Avenue and Scranton Street. Just three miles away, a separate fatal shooting had taken place in the 3100 block of Ursula Street, leaving one man dead and a teenager injured.

Authorities say the pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was crossing East Colfax outside of a designated crosswalk when he was hit. Responding officers rendered emergency aid at the scene before the man was transported to a local hospital. Sadly, he later died from his injuries. His identity will be released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

While the investigation remains active, initial findings suggest that excessive speed was not a contributing factor in the crash.

We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Colorado Pedestrian Accidents

In recent years, Denver has witnessed a disturbing increase in deadly pedestrian accidents—a trend that mirrors a nationwide surge. Between 2012 and 2022, pedestrian fatalities across the U.S. jumped by more than 35%, with countless lives lost each year due to collisions with vehicles. Sadly, Denver continues to be part of this growing crisis.

Many of these tragic incidents are preventable. Negligent driving behaviors such as distracted driving, speeding, and failing to yield remain leading causes. Behind each statistic is a real person—a parent, child, friend, or neighbor—whose life was cut short in an instant. The aftermath leaves families devastated and communities reeling.

For those who have lost a loved one in a pedestrian crash, the emotional toll is only part of the struggle. Families often face overwhelming financial burdens, from funeral costs to the sudden loss of income and long-term emotional suffering. It’s an incredibly difficult path to navigate alone.

If your loved one was taken due to another driver’s carelessness, you may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. An experienced wrongful death attorney in Denver can help you seek accountability and fair compensation to cover expenses and support your family’s future.
