Colorado Scooter Accidents
Fatal accidents involving pedestrians and micromobility devices are becoming an alarming part of daily headlines across Colorado. According to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation, deaths linked to electric scooters and other micromobility vehicles have sharply increased in recent years. Busy intersections in metro areas like Denver are particularly dangerous due to high traffic volume, poor nighttime visibility, and widespread distracted driving.
As the popularity of scooters continues to grow in cities across the state, so do safety concerns. If you’ve lost a loved one in a fatal scooter or motor vehicle accident, it’s important to understand the risks and your rights.
1. Limited Visibility After Dark:
Scooters are compact and often lack sufficient lighting, making them hard to detect at night. Drivers navigating poorly lit streets may not see a rider until it’s too late.
2. Lack of Protected Lanes:
In many Colorado cities, scooter riders are forced to share roads with larger vehicles. Without dedicated scooter or bike lanes, the chances of a collision rise significantly.
3. Driver Negligence:
Many motorists aren’t trained to watch for scooters at intersections or while turning. A split-second lapse in attention can cause life-threatening injuries or fatalities.
4. No Helmet or Safety Gear:
Unlike cyclists, scooter riders frequently skip helmets and protective equipment. This makes head trauma and severe injuries more likely during a crash.
5. Speed Mismatches:
Scooters operate in a gray zone—too fast for sidewalks and too slow for highway traffic. This creates confusion for drivers and puts riders at increased risk.
