Gilpin Co., CO – Semi-Truck Crash Collides with Amtrak Train, Causes Injuries on S Beaver Creek Rd
Written by Bradley Smith
Gilpin County, CO (July 17, 2025) — A collision between an Amtrak train and a semi-truck at a railroad crossing on South Beaver Creek Road left one person seriously injured on Monday morning, July 14, prompting an extensive emergency response.
The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. and involved Amtrak’s California Zephyr, which had departed Denver and was headed west toward San Francisco. According to the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office, the semi-truck driver sustained significant injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. No injuries were reported among the passengers and crew aboard the train.
First responders quickly arrived on the scene, working alongside air medical teams to stabilize and transport the injured individual. Authorities have confirmed that the truck driver was the only person hurt in the incident.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, and it has not yet been determined whether the truck was stopped on the tracks or attempting to cross when the train arrived. Road closures were put in place in the surrounding area while crews cleared the scene and assessed the extent of the damage.
Amtrak has not yet provided updates on the condition of the train or the status of the California Zephyr route following the incident. Both Amtrak and local investigators are continuing to examine the events that led to the collision.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Colorado Truck Accidents
Colorado’s roadways—ranging from dense urban corridors in Denver to winding highways through the Rockies—are frequent sites of serious truck accidents. With the mix of high-speed traffic, sharp elevation changes, and unpredictable weather, collisions involving large commercial trucks often result in severe injuries and complex legal challenges.
Truck crashes in Colorado can happen anywhere, but certain conditions make them more likely, particularly in mountainous terrain or near busy freight routes. Some of the most common contributing factors include:
- Speeding on Mountain Grades: Heavy trucks require more time and distance to slow down, especially on steep descents. When truck drivers misjudge curves or downhill momentum, the result can be devastating collisions or dangerous rollovers.
- Brake Malfunctions: The constant use of brakes on long declines can lead to overheating, reducing stopping power or causing complete brake failure. These mechanical failures are a known risk on Colorado’s mountain roads and can trigger major crashes.
- Improper Passing or Lane Drift: Narrow roads and tight turns increase the risk of sideswipe or head-on collisions when truck drivers—or other vehicles around them—attempt unsafe passing or drift out of lanes.
- Sudden Weather Shifts: Snow, fog, and ice can appear quickly at higher elevations, reducing traction and visibility. For large trucks, even slight loss of control in these conditions can lead to jackknifing, multi-vehicle crashes, or highway shutdowns.
