Watkins, CO — Injury Wreck on I-70 Near Airpark Rd
Written by Bradley Smith
Watkins, CO (April 25, 2025) – Early Thursday morning, a crash caused significant disruptions along westbound Interstate 70 near Watkins.
At approximately 6:55 a.m. on April 24, emergency personnel were dispatched to a collision scene on Interstate 70 between Interstate 70 Business North and Airpark Road. The right lane of the highway remained closed for an extended period as crews worked to manage the aftermath. Traffic backups quickly formed in the westbound lanes as drivers were forced to merge into fewer lanes.
First responders, including police and emergency medical teams, arrived promptly to assist those involved. At least one person was hurt in the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. The extent of injuries sustained is still being assessed. Authorities remained on site throughout the morning, working to clear the roadway and investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time.
Car Accidents in Colorado
Car accidents in Colorado are unfortunately common, with thousands occurring every year across the state. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, over 120,000 crashes were reported in a recent year, leading to thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities. Factors like weather, distracted driving, and speeding contribute heavily to these incidents. Drivers are encouraged to stay vigilant, obey posted speed limits, and minimize distractions to help reduce accident risks.
Given how difficult accidents can be, it is important to understand some of the common causes behind major crashes:
- Distracted Driving: This remains one of the leading causes of crashes across Colorado. Common distractions include texting, adjusting music, or interacting with passengers. Even a few seconds of lost focus can lead to serious collisions.
- Fatigue: Driving while tired can have the same impact on reaction time and decision-making as driving under the influence. Long trips, lack of sleep, or exhausting work schedules often contribute to fatigue-related accidents.
- Poor Weather Conditions: Colorado’s unpredictable weather can make road conditions dangerous. Rain, snow, and fog can reduce visibility and traction, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
- Speeding: Exceeding the posted speed limits shortens the driver’s reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Speeding remains a major factor in many fatal collisions each year.
- Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs continues to be a deadly choice made by too many drivers. Impaired driving affects judgment, coordination, and reaction times.
