Arvada, CO - Fatal Hit-And-Run Collision Takes One Life on Wadsworth Blvd

Arvada, CO (May 9, 2025) — A tragic hit-and-run crash in Arvada claimed the life of a man in a wheelchair early Thursday morning, May 8.

According to the Arvada Police Department, the incident occurred just before 2 a.m. when a man using a mobility wheelchair was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Wadsworth Boulevard, just north of West 53rd Avenue. A pickup truck heading south struck the man and left the scene without stopping.

A passerby noticed the injured man in the roadway and stopped to assist until emergency responders arrived. Sadly, the man later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Police continue to investigate the details of the incident.

We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Colorado Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian fatalities are an increasingly urgent concern across Colorado, with cities like Arvada seeing a troubling rise in deadly incidents. Data from the Colorado Department of Transportation reveals a consistent uptick in pedestrian deaths in recent years, particularly in high-traffic areas where drivers often fail to yield or notice people crossing the street.

Urban environments, such as those found throughout Arvada, pose serious risks to pedestrians due to a combination of factors—heavily trafficked roads, limited street lighting at night, and a growing number of distracted drivers.

If your loved one has been tragically lost in a pedestrian accident, it’s critical to understand the contributing risks and your legal rights:

1. Poor Visibility at Night:
Pedestrians are significantly more vulnerable after dark. Inadequate street lighting and dark clothing often make it difficult for drivers to see people walking along or across roadways until it’s too late.

2. Inadequate Crosswalks or Signals:
Many intersections in suburban areas like Arvada lack proper pedestrian crossing infrastructure, increasing the likelihood of collisions, especially where traffic moves quickly or drivers are inattentive.

3. Distracted or Impaired Driving:
Cell phone use, speeding, and driving under the influence remain leading causes of crashes involving pedestrians. A moment of negligence can result in devastating consequences.

4. Failure to Yield the Right-of-Way:
Some drivers fail to stop for pedestrians even when they are clearly within a marked crosswalk. This disregard for pedestrian rights is a major factor in fatal collisions.

5. High-Speed Zones Near Residential Areas:
When high-speed roads run close to neighborhoods or parks, the risk to walkers and joggers increases significantly—especially for children and the elderly.
