Aurora, CO — Police Officer Hurt in Crash on S Buckley Rd near E Dartmouth Ave

Aurora, CO (May 9, 2025) – An Aurora Police officer was injured during an attempt to join a pursuit of a stolen truck early Friday morning, May 9.

Around 5:51 a.m., officers spotted a Ford F-150 Raptor, which had been reported stolen out of Denver. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, leading officers on a chase. At approximately 5:57 a.m., an officer, while responding to the pursuit with lights and sirens activated, collided with another vehicle at the intersection of South Buckley Road and East Dartmouth Avenue. The other driver, who was not involved in the chase, was traveling northbound on South Buckley Road.

The officer was transported to the hospital with injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle, a woman, was unharmed. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We hope for the full recovery of the injured officer.

Colorado Traffic Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents continue to be a pressing issue in Colorado, affecting both urban and rural communities. In 2023, nearly 700 lives were lost in traffic collisions statewide, with tens of thousands more injured. Factors such as heavy traffic, unpredictable weather, and ongoing construction zones contribute to the increased likelihood of accidents. Cities like Aurora consistently report some of the highest accident rates, making it even more important for drivers to stay vigilant and cautious.

Understanding the common causes of accidents can help reduce risks and keep everyone safer on the roads:

Intersection Crashes: Intersections are high-risk areas, with confusion over right-of-way rules leading to many side-impact collisions. Drivers often misjudge speed or timing at traffic lights or stop signs, resulting in serious accidents.

Impaired Driving: Whether it’s due to alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication, impaired drivers are more likely to make poor decisions and react slowly, putting everyone on the road at risk.

Running Red Lights: Disregarding traffic signals can result in dangerous broadside crashes. Drivers running red lights often don’t realize how little time they have to clear the intersection safely.

Tailgating: Driving too closely to the vehicle in front can make it difficult to stop quickly in case of sudden changes in traffic. Rear-end collisions are common when drivers fail to maintain a safe distance.

Road Rage: Aggressive driving, such as speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and displaying hostile gestures, can escalate dangerous situations and lead to avoidable accidents.

Pedestrian Accidents: Failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks or near sidewalks can cause severe accidents, as pedestrians have no protection from vehicles.

By recognizing these risk factors, drivers can take steps to stay safe and reduce the likelihood of accidents.
