Denver, CO (April 16, 2025) – A serious two-car crash on the city’s southwest side left one person hospitalized and brought traffic to a standstill Tuesday evening.

The collision took place at approximately 7:45 p.m. on April 15, near the intersection of South Sheridan Boulevard and West Vassar Avenue. Officers with the Denver Police Department responded quickly after receiving reports of a crash involving injuries. Upon arrival, first responders found two damaged vehicles and at least one injured motorist.

Medical crews assessed those involved on the scene and transported one individual to a local hospital for further treatment. Their current condition has not been released. Traffic in the area was heavily impacted as authorities worked to clear the vehicles and investigate the cause of the crash. We hope the person hurt in this crash is able to make a full and speedy recovery.

Auto Accidents in Colorado

In Colorado, thousands of car crashes occur every year, many of them resulting in serious injuries. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, there were over 120,000 traffic crashes statewide in a recent year, and nearly 20,000 of those resulted in injury. Urban areas like Denver often see a higher rate of collisions due to traffic congestion, distracted drivers, and complex intersections.

When it comes to car accidents, there are several common causes that authorities and safety experts often identify:

  • Distracted Driving: Texting, adjusting navigation systems, or even eating behind the wheel can cause a driver to lose focus. Distracted driving continues to be one of the top causes of accidents across Colorado and the United States. A brief glance away from the road can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
  • Failure to Yield: Intersections like S Sheridan Blvd and W Vassar Ave can be especially prone to accidents when drivers fail to yield the right-of-way. Misjudging another vehicle’s speed or ignoring signage are frequent contributing factors.
  • Speeding: Even driving just a few miles per hour over the speed limit can increase both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of the injuries. Speed reduces reaction time and can turn a minor accident into a major one.
  • Poor Visibility or Low Lighting: Many crashes occur during dusk or nighttime hours. Limited visibility can reduce a driver’s ability to react to hazards on the road, especially at intersections that may not be well-lit.
  • Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol remains a persistent issue in Colorado. Even a small amount of impairment can affect a driver’s judgment and reaction time.
