Denver, CO — Two Killed in Crash Involving Scooter on Federal Blvd
Written by Bradley Smith
Denver, CO (April 20, 2025) – A deadly collision involving a motor vehicle and two individuals riding a standup electric scooter claimed two lives on Saturday night, April 19. The tragic crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of southbound Federal Boulevard and West 14th Avenue in Denver.
The Denver Police Department responded to the scene and began an immediate investigation. Authorities confirmed that both individuals riding the scooter were fatally injured in the impact. Despite emergency medical efforts, both were pronounced deceased at the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
According to reports, the driver of the vehicle involved stayed at the location and is cooperating with police. Southbound Federal Boulevard was shut down from 14th Avenue to West Holden Place as officers examined the scene and documented evidence.
The cause of the crash has not been publicly disclosed. Investigators are working to determine what led to the collision, including whether speed, impairment, or visibility played a role. As of Sunday, the investigation remains ongoing and authorities have not announced any charges.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased victims during this grieving time.
Fatal Accidents in Colorado
Across Colorado, fatal accidents are a tragic part of daily traffic reports. Data from the Colorado Department of Transportation shows a troubling increase in pedestrian- and micromobility-related fatalities in recent years. Urban intersections like those in Denver often see the highest risk due to a mix of heavy traffic, lighting issues, and distracted driving. Community awareness and improved infrastructure are ongoing goals across the state.
One of the growing concerns in the state involves micromobility devices. Here are a few key issues surrounding scooter-related accidents:
- Low Visibility at Night: Electric scooters are small and can be difficult for drivers to see, especially after dark. Inadequate lighting on scooters or dimly lit roads can further reduce visibility and reaction time.
- Lack of Designated Lanes: Many roads lack safe paths for scooters and other micromobility users. Without designated bike or scooter lanes, riders are often forced to share lanes with cars, increasing the chance of a crash.
- Driver Awareness: Drivers may not be accustomed to looking out for scooters, especially at intersections or when turning. A lack of awareness or inattention can easily lead to serious or fatal accidents.
- Helmet Use and Safety Gear: Unlike bicycles, many scooter riders forgo helmets. This significantly increases the risk of fatal head injuries when accidents occur.
- Speed Differentials: Scooters move slower than cars but faster than pedestrians. This unique speed range can make it harder for drivers to judge distance and safely avoid them.
