Denver Motorcycle Accidents
Each year, Denver sees a troubling number of motorcycle crashes that result in serious — and often life-changing — injuries. While motorcycles account for a small fraction of vehicles on Colorado’s roads, riders are consistently overrepresented in crash injury statistics.
According to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation, motorcyclists make up less than 3% of total traffic crashes, yet they represent a disproportionate share of severe injuries. In urban areas like Denver, high traffic volume, driver inattention, and unpredictable road conditions all contribute to the heightened risks motorcyclists face every day.
What Makes Motorcycle Accidents So Dangerous?
- Little to No Protection: Without the protective shell of a car, riders are exposed to the full force of any impact. Even with a helmet and protective gear, injuries such as broken bones, internal trauma, and spinal cord damage are common.
- Low Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller and often less visible to other drivers, especially in heavy traffic or when drivers fail to check blind spots. Many serious injury crashes occur when drivers change lanes or turn without noticing an oncoming motorcycle.
- Hazardous Road Conditions: Gravel, uneven pavement, potholes, and even wet weather pose far greater risks to motorcycles than other vehicles, increasing the likelihood of crashes that result in injuries.
- Driver Negligence: Distracted driving, speeding, tailgating, and failure to yield are all common causes of injury accidents involving motorcyclists in the Denver metro area.
