Thornton, CO — Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Thornton Pkwy

Thornton, CO (April 16, 2025) – A crash involving a motorcycle and a sedan led to the death of one man and left a 12-year-old girl critically injured Tuesday night, according to the Thornton Police Department.

The collision occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on April 15, near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Welby Road, just west of Colorado Boulevard. Authorities say a 17-year-old driver of a BMW sedan struck a motorcycle carrying two passengers — a 38-year-old man and a young girl.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported both victims to a nearby hospital. The man later died from his injuries. The girl remains in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.

The teen driver was arrested on suspicion of careless driving causing death. Due to the suspect’s age, his identity has not been released. Police continue to investigate the crash and are working to determine the full sequence of events.

The Adams County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the name of the deceased victim once his family has been notified.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and wish the young girl a full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Colorado

Motorcycle accidents in Colorado are often severe due to the lack of protective barriers for riders. In 2023 alone, over 130 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roadways — a number that has trended upward in recent years. Many of these incidents happen in suburban intersections where visibility and driver awareness play a crucial role in avoiding tragedy.

To better understand the risks motorcyclists face, here are some key concerns and impacts:

  • Visibility and Right-of-Way Violations: Drivers often fail to see motorcycles, especially when turning or changing lanes. This is a leading factor in collisions, especially at intersections. Smaller vehicle size can lead to dangerous assumptions about speed or distance.
  • Injuries Among Younger Passengers: When minors are involved in motorcycle crashes, the risks are especially high. Children are more vulnerable to traumatic injuries and often require longer recovery periods, making these situations even more emotionally and physically difficult for families.
  • Charges Involving Teenage Drivers: Teen drivers may lack the experience and judgment needed to safely share the road with other motorists. When careless driving causes harm, Colorado law allows for charges such as careless driving causing death — even for juvenile suspects.
  • Ongoing Investigations and Legal Uncertainty: In crashes like this, families often face long waits for answers. Law enforcement must collect evidence, review witness statements, and consult accident reconstruction experts. Legal outcomes can depend heavily on the details gathered during this time.
