Denver, CO (June 23, 2025) — A fatal crash involving a pedestrian brought traffic to a standstill early Friday morning, June 20, on the westbound side of 6th Avenue near North Sheridan Boulevard.

Denver Police reported that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle along the highway just northeast of Lakewood. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the driver involved remained on-site and is cooperating with the investigation.

The incident was first shared by police around 3:30 a.m. on X (formerly Twitter). As emergency responders worked the scene, traffic on westbound 6th Avenue was diverted onto Sheridan Boulevard, causing significant delays. Witnesses on social media described traffic at a complete stop for over an hour.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, all westbound lanes were reopened by approximately 7:30 a.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.

Colorado Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian fatalities continue to be a troubling issue in Denver and across Colorado. As the city grows and traffic volumes increase, pedestrians face heightened risks—especially in high-traffic corridors and areas with limited crosswalks or poor visibility. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, pedestrian deaths have risen sharply in recent years, with Denver consistently reporting some of the highest numbers in the state.

Several factors contribute to these heartbreaking incidents:

Distracted and Impaired Driving: Many fatal pedestrian crashes occur because drivers fail to notice people crossing the street, often due to cellphone use, intoxication, or simply not paying attention. A split second of negligence can lead to irreversible consequences.

Poor Lighting and Unsafe Crossings: Pedestrian fatalities are more likely to happen at night or in areas where crosswalks are poorly marked or signals are hard to see. In many cases, pedestrians are struck while legally crossing the road.

Urban Speeding: High speeds on city roads increase the likelihood of deadly outcomes in pedestrian-involved crashes. Even small increases in vehicle speed dramatically reduce a driver’s ability to react in time, and significantly increase the severity of injuries.

Lifelong Impact on Families: For the loved ones of victims, the pain goes far beyond the crash itself. Families often struggle with grief, sudden funeral expenses, and unanswered questions about how and why the tragedy occurred.

If you’ve lost someone due to a pedestrian accident in Denver, you may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. This can provide financial relief and help hold negligent drivers accountable. While no legal action can undo the loss, taking steps toward justice may offer some sense of closure.
