Aurora, CO – One Killed After Speeding BMW Evades Police, Crashes on Iliff Ave
Written by Bradley Smith
Aurora, CO (October 10, 2025) – A speeding driver who tried to flee from police caused a devastating crash Thursday afternoon, October 9, that killed a young man in Aurora.
According to Lieutenant Chris Amsler of the Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit, the crash began when an APD motorcycle officer clocked a white BMW traveling 84 mph in a 65 mph zone on northbound I-225 near Yale Avenue. The officer attempted a traffic stop around 2 p.m., but the BMW driver refused to pull over.
The suspect sped onto the left shoulder, weaving through traffic before exiting the interstate at Iliff Avenue. The BMW then continued east on Iliff at a high rate of speed, running a red light at Blackhawk Street. It slammed into a red Honda Civic that was making a left turn to go west on Iliff.
The impact was catastrophic. The crash tore the Honda Civic in half, throwing debris across several lanes. The rear of the Civic struck two other vehicles stopped at the intersection. The force of the collision instantly killed the Honda’s driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, according to Amsler.
The motorcycle officer arrived about 30 seconds later and took both the BMW driver and a passenger into custody without incident. Police said both were cooperative and were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Investigators shut down Iliff Avenue and Blackhawk Street for several hours while they reconstructed the crash. Aurora Police confirmed that the victim’s identity will be released once the family is notified.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life in this tragic collision.
Fatal Car Accidents in Colorado
High-speed chases and reckless driving incidents are among the leading causes of car accidents in Colorado. Intersections like Iliff Avenue and Blackhawk Street in Aurora often see heavy traffic, making them particularly dangerous when drivers ignore signals or flee police.
Victims of high-speed collisions frequently suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries such as:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from violent impact
- Spinal cord injuries that cause paralysis or loss of mobility
