Denver, CO — Man Loses Life in Pedestrian Accident on I-70 near Federal Blvd

Denver, CO (May 18, 2025) –  A man was killed in a tragic pedestrian crash on the morning of Saturday, May 18, near the intersection of Interstate 70 West and Federal Boulevard, according to the Denver Police Department.

The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when the man reportedly pulled over after a pair of skis fell from his vehicle. As he attempted to retrieve the items, a truck approached. Both the pedestrian and the driver tried to avoid a collision but tragically moved in the same direction, resulting in a fatal impact.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, but the man succumbed to his injuries. The driver remained at the location and cooperated with authorities. Denver Police have confirmed the crash remains under investigation.

This fatality marks yet another reminder of the dangers that can arise suddenly on busy roadways, particularly when unexpected hazards force individuals out of their vehicles. Further details have not yet been released as the investigation continues.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.

Colorado Pedestrian Crashes

Tragically, fatal pedestrian crashes remain a persistent and rising concern across Colorado. In recent years, data from the Colorado Department of Transportation has revealed a steady increase in deadly incidents involving individuals on foot. In 2023 alone, hundreds of lives were lost in pedestrian-related traffic collisions—many of them occurring in busy urban areas like Aurora and Denver, where complex roadways, high vehicle volume, and limited pedestrian infrastructure intersect.

Several key factors continue to drive these heartbreaking accidents:

Driver Distraction: Whether it’s texting, adjusting controls, or simply not paying attention, distracted drivers are a leading cause of fatal pedestrian collisions. Just one glance away from the road can result in irreversible loss.

Speeding in City Environments: Excessive speed drastically shortens a driver’s ability to react and increases the force of impact. In areas with heavy foot traffic, speeding can turn a near miss into a fatal tragedy.

Low Visibility: Crashes often occur in early morning or late-night hours when poor lighting and weather conditions limit visibility. Pedestrians in dark clothing or near unlit areas are at especially high risk.

Failure to Yield: Intersections are high-risk zones where drivers often fail to yield to crossing pedestrians—even when the pedestrian has the right of way. These moments can prove fatal in an instant.

Impairment and Fatigue: Drivers under the influence or operating a vehicle while fatigued are significantly more likely to miss seeing pedestrians, especially at crosswalks or during turns.

Every fatal crash leaves behind grieving families, unanswered questions, and a community grappling with loss. If you’ve lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn next.
