Colorado Pedestrian Accidents

As Colorado’s cities continue to grow and traffic volumes rise, pedestrian safety has become an urgent issue across the state. Every year, numerous pedestrians lose their lives in accidents that, in many cases, could have been avoided with greater caution and responsibility from drivers.

Statewide, over 100,000 traffic crashes are reported annually, with a significant portion involving pedestrians. Hundreds of pedestrians are injured or killed each year while crossing streets, walking through intersections, or traveling along busy roadways in urban and suburban areas alike.

Common Factors Behind Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Colorado

While each incident is unique, many deadly pedestrian collisions share common causes rooted in human error and negligence, including:

  • Distracted Driving: Drivers who fail to notice pedestrians in crosswalks or near intersections due to phone use, eating, or other distractions.
  • Excessive Speed: High speeds reduce reaction times and amplify the severity of injuries when collisions occur.
  • Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and delay reaction times, greatly increasing the risk of hitting pedestrians.
  • Failure to Yield: Drivers often neglect to give pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks or during turns at busy intersections.
  • Reduced Visibility: Poor lighting, fog, rain, or snow can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, especially at night.

Colorado’s variable weather further complicates pedestrian safety. Snow, ice, and heavy rain can make roads and sidewalks slick and hazardous, especially in high-traffic corridors like Denver’s Broadway, Aurora’s Colfax Avenue, and Colorado Springs’ Nevada Avenue.
