Aurora, CO – Woman Loses Life in Collision on E Jewell Ave near S Havana St
Written by Bradley Smith
Aurora, CO (July 30, 2025) – A tragic auto-pedestrian accident in Aurora claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman early Tuesday morning as she attempted to cross a busy intersection with a walker, according to the Aurora Police Department.
The incident occurred around 6:36 a.m. at the intersection of East Jewell Avenue and South Havana Street. Authorities say the woman was not in a designated crosswalk when she attempted to cross Jewell Avenue. As she passed in front of a GMC pickup truck that was stopped at a red light, she reportedly struck a hole in the pavement and fell.
Moments later, the driver of the pickup made a right turn onto southbound Havana Street, inadvertently running over the woman. Emergency crews responded quickly and transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver remained on scene and is cooperating fully with the investigation, according to police. No charges have been filed at this time, though the case remains under active review by Aurora’s Traffic Unit.
As part of the investigation, two southbound lanes on Havana Street were temporarily closed, leaving only one lane open to traffic during the morning commute. While delays were minimal, police urged motorists to exercise caution in the area.
Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the woman lost in this heartbreaking incident.
Colorado Pedestrian Accidents
As Aurora continues to expand and traffic volumes increase along its busiest corridors, pedestrian safety has become an increasingly urgent issue. Too many lives are cut short each year when people on foot are struck by vehicles, often in accidents that could have been avoided.
Throughout Colorado, more than 100,000 traffic collisions are reported annually. Tragically, a significant number of these involve pedestrians who are seriously hurt or killed while walking across intersections, crossing major roadways, or moving through areas not designed with pedestrian safety in mind. Aurora is no exception.
While the details of each collision are unique, fatal pedestrian accidents in Aurora frequently involve similar contributing factors, often tied to driver negligence or risky behavior. These include:
- Distracted driving, which can cause drivers to overlook people in crosswalks or stepping off curbs
- Excessive speed, which shortens reaction time and magnifies the severity of injuries in a crash
- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs both judgment and coordination
- Failing to yield, especially when turning at busy intersections or passing through poorly marked crosswalks
- Limited visibility at night or during foggy or rainy weather makes it harder to detect pedestrians in time
Weather can further complicate matters. Snow, black ice, and freezing rain often make Aurora’s roadways and sidewalks more dangerous, increasing the odds of deadly outcomes in places like S. Havana Street, E. Colfax Avenue, and E. Alameda Parkway.
Losing a loved one in a pedestrian crash is a heartbreaking and life-altering event. Families are left grieving while also facing unexpected financial burdens—funeral expenses, medical bills, and the loss of a family member’s support and presence.
