Colorado Bicycle Crashes

Bicycling offers Denver residents a healthy, eco-friendly way to get around—but tragically, it can also come with deadly risks. Each year, fatal bicycle crashes claim the lives of too many Coloradans, leaving behind devastated families and unanswered questions. In the Denver metro area alone, the number of serious and fatal collisions involving cyclists has been steadily rising, even as the city invests in more bike lanes and safety initiatives.

The aftermath of a fatal bicycle crash is overwhelming. Families are often left grieving while also navigating unexpected medical bills, funeral expenses, and financial uncertainty. While nothing can undo the pain of losing a loved one, holding the at-fault party accountable can help bring a measure of justice—and provide support during an incredibly difficult time.

Most deadly bike crashes in Denver are entirely preventable. Inattentive, impaired, or reckless drivers are frequently to blame, especially in hit-and-run incidents or at intersections where drivers fail to yield. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), human error plays a role in more than 9 out of 10 traffic fatalities nationwide. In Colorado, distracted driving, speeding, and drug- or alcohol-impaired driving are among the top causes of fatal bicycle collisions.

Denver’s urban environment also presents unique challenges for cyclists. Narrow roads, poor visibility, and increased traffic congestion create dangerous conditions—particularly in areas without protected bike lanes. Fatal crashes often occur during early morning or evening hours, when visibility is low and drivers may be drowsy or distracted.
