Colorado Motorcycle Accidents
Denver continues to see a concerning number of deadly motorcycle accidents each year. Despite making up a small percentage of all traffic incidents in Colorado, motorcyclists account for over 20% of the state’s traffic-related fatalities, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. In urban centers like Denver, where roadways are often congested and fast-paced, riders face particularly high risks.
There are several common factors that contribute to these tragic crashes:
Lack of Protection: Unlike drivers in cars, motorcyclists don’t have the structural protection of a vehicle around them. Even with helmets and protective gear, the force of impact can be deadly in a crash.
Low Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller and often fall into other drivers’ blind spots. Many fatal collisions occur simply because a driver didn’t see the rider when changing lanes or making a turn.
Hazardous Road Conditions: Debris, potholes, slick surfaces, and uneven pavement—while often minor nuisances for cars—can be catastrophic for motorcycles, easily causing loss of control.
Severe Injury Risks: Motorcyclists involved in crashes often suffer from critical or fatal injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, and compound fractures, leading to life-altering consequences or loss of life.
Driver Error: Many fatal motorcycle accidents are caused by distracted, reckless, or impaired drivers who fail to yield, follow too closely, or simply don’t respect the space motorcycles need to operate safely.
If someone you love was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Denver area, it’s important to understand your legal rights. Grieving families may be entitled to compensation for funeral costs, lost income, and the deep emotional toll that follows a sudden and preventable loss.
