Denver, CO - Fatal Pedestrian Accident on I-25

Denver, CO (July 7, 2024) – A tragic incident unfolded early Saturday morning when a pedestrian was fatally struck on Interstate 25 in Denver. According to the Denver Police Department (DPD), the deadly collision occurred at approximately 7:02 a.m. on July 5 in the southbound lanes near the West Alameda Avenue exit.

The victim had reportedly pulled over to the shoulder to change a flat tire when they were hit by a black Toyota 4Runner traveling in the far-right lane. Emergency crews from Denver Fire and Rescue responded quickly to the scene, but despite their efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV did not stop and fled the scene, leaving behind a damaged vehicle with significant impact to the front passenger side. Authorities have launched an investigation through the department’s vehicular crimes division and are asking the public for help identifying the suspect vehicle or providing any information related to the incident.

As a result of the crash and the ongoing investigation, a stretch of I-25 near 8th Avenue was shut down for several hours and reopened just before 11 a.m.

The name of the deceased has not been released, as officials continue efforts to notify next of kin.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends mourning this heartbreaking loss.

Colorado Car Accidents

Denver’s streets have become increasingly hazardous for pedestrians in recent years. With more vehicles, denser traffic, and growing urban development, fatal pedestrian accidents are a heartbreaking and all-too-common occurrence across the city. From bustling downtown intersections to busy roadways like Colfax Avenue, Federal Boulevard, and I-25, pedestrians face significant risks when simply trying to cross the street.

Unlike motorists, pedestrians lack any physical protection in the event of a collision. Even a low-speed impact can result in devastating injuries—or worse. Tragically, many of these fatal accidents could have been prevented.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), human error plays a role in over 94% of traffic accidents. In Denver, common causes of deadly pedestrian crashes include:

  • Drivers failing to yield at crosswalks
  • Distracted or inattentive driving
  • Speeding through residential or urban areas
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Making illegal or unsafe turns at intersections
