Denver, CO - One Killed, Four Hospitalized in Wrong-Way Crash on I-25 near 20th St

Denver, CO (June 11, 2025) – A deadly wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 25 left one person dead and four others hospitalized, according to Denver police.

The collision occurred around 3 a.m. near the 20th Street exit when a Dodge Caravan, reportedly traveling south in the northbound lanes, collided with a Subaru. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Dodge, believed to be at fault, died at the scene. Their passenger was trapped in the wreckage and later transported to the hospital; the extent of their injuries remains unknown.

Three individuals inside the Subaru were also taken to a nearby hospital, two of whom sustained serious injuries.

Before the crash, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) had attempted to stop the Dodge Caravan after spotting it traveling the wrong way on I-25 near Mead. A brief pursuit was initiated but was called off due to safety concerns. CSP had alerted other agencies about the vehicle before the fatal incident occurred in Denver.

Northbound lanes of I-25 remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the wreckage. The highway reopened around 9 a.m.

The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Colorado Car Accidents

Car accidents continue to take a devastating toll on Denver residents, with thousands of injury crashes and dozens of fatal collisions reported each year. From downtown streets to major highways like I-25 and I-70, the consequences of a serious crash can be overwhelming, leaving victims and families to deal with medical emergencies, long-term recovery, financial strain, and emotional trauma.

Unfortunately, many of these tragic accidents are preventable. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) attributes more than 90% of all traffic collisions to human error. In Denver, factors such as distracted driving, impaired driving, excessive speed, and driver fatigue frequently play a role in both injury-causing and fatal wrecks. These risks are often compounded by heavy urban traffic, unpredictable weather conditions, and high-speed chases involving stolen vehicles.

Denver’s roads can become especially hazardous during snowstorms or rain, when slick surfaces increase stopping distances and reduce driver visibility. Serious crashes—including rollovers, T-bone collisions, and pedestrian strikes—occur far too often under these conditions, leaving individuals with catastrophic injuries or grieving the sudden loss of a loved one.
