Colorado Traffic Accidents
As Colorado’s population booms and traffic congestion worsens, pedestrian safety is becoming a growing concern throughout the state. From Denver’s urban core to suburban corridors in Aurora and Colorado Springs, people on foot are increasingly at risk of being struck by vehicles — often with devastating results.
Each year, hundreds of pedestrians in Colorado are seriously injured or killed in traffic collisions. Whether crossing at intersections, walking along poorly lit roads, or navigating high-traffic areas without sidewalks, pedestrians are vulnerable in situations where drivers fail to operate responsibly.
What’s Behind Colorado’s Pedestrian Crashes?
While every incident is different, many pedestrian accidents share common contributing factors, including:
- Driver Inattention: Texting, eating, or multitasking behind the wheel can lead drivers to miss crosswalks or fail to see pedestrians until it’s too late.
- Speeding: The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time a driver has to stop — and the more severe the injuries when a collision occurs.
- Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drug use continue to play a major role in crashes involving pedestrians.
- Failure to Yield: Many drivers fail to give pedestrians the right of way, especially when turning or approaching crosswalks.
- Poor Visibility: Colorado’s snow, fog, rain, and early nightfall during winter months often make it harder to see people on foot — increasing the risk of accidents.
High-risk areas include heavily trafficked roads such as Colfax Avenue in Aurora, Federal Boulevard in Denver, and Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs.
